tabla dubb uses a foundational element in popular Egyptian musical culture (the tabla) as the basic building block of a music that works with structure and texture, tension and release, repetition and difference. Samples from various sources (from Fouad El Mohandes to Abd El Baset Hamouda, from Gregorian Chanting to Abd El Azim El Atawany) are an integral part of the sound world being created, buried deep within the mix these references are not used as decoration as much as a secret spark, a ghost in the machine. This is a music that aims to be charged, urgent, haunted, intense and dangerous.

tabla dubb first premiered at HOMEWORK: A FORUM FOR CULTURAL PRACTICES IN THE REGION in Beirut, 2002

Since then it has been performed in (amongst others):Cairo, Sao Paolo, Stockholm, Umea, Castillon, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Istanbul, Brussels, Vevey, Rome, London

The pounding rhythm of the tabla and the scale of the imagery projected onto a screen suspended in the middle of the space seemed to level distinctions of class and place, even if for a moment: rare in a city as stratified as Cairo yet fitting given Khan’s own intention to destabilize prevailing notions of self in relation to the urban topography.

a provocation to question, interpret, invent, celebrate and exercise a multitude of identities wrought of dynamic cultural products. The performance subtly combines criticism and compassion, while inciting a questioning of consumption and exploitation as the interstices of urban co-habitation. Again, power politics are subverted and the distinction between object and subject are blurred, and the viewer must deliberately situate her/himself in relation to this collision of codes.

time a landscape which transports us to other spheres and a new temporality, placing electronic images alongside the spectacle, demanding no more just only the eyes, but the whole body. The images of daily scenes of architecture and life on the streets are altered, replaced and, at times, interrupted by others, recreating natural spaces. This generates new contexts of space-time, less territorial and more fluid, which seems to connect us with the imaginary of a different globalization, less economical and more imaginary, closer to swapping than to a vertical imposition.
